“Surely” is the third track from the EP Listen
Story
I’m trying to remember how this one came about. I think I came up with the chord progression and then put down the solo. I often piece together what ends up being used as the “guitar solo” on songs after everything else is done, but this one I did first and in one take (bad notes and all), which is not really that impressive when you listen to what it is (pentatonic drivel). The lyrics came together really quickly after that and then it was just a matter of layering guitar on top of guitar which is one of my favorite things to do! This really sounded like a Cure chord progression to me when I first came up with it (obviously not nearly as good as anything Robert Smith comes up with) and I initially thought I was going to have to try to make this not sound like the Cure. I quickly realized that being blessed with none of the talent of Robert Smith made that pretty easy.
