“If you like your records a bit more retro, especially if you’re a fan of the shimmering indie pop of the 1980s – think The Cure, the more commercial side of Hüsker Dü, or the hard hitting, ice-cold guitar work of Will Sergeant in Echo and the Bunnymen – then check out Hollow Star‘s five track EP Listen.” - Loz Etheridge
“Capital takes from the hardcore intensity of Hüsker Dü (that Minneapolis connection), reworking into a power pop sound that echoes with the tightness of XTC at their most inventive.” - Mark Buckley
“...It has to do with brilliantly busy basslines and perfectly delivered vocals, coiling guitar riffs, chiming, choppy sonic waters, neat licks, energy… almost to the point of euphoria, bounce and drive and directness and infectiousness and addiction.” - Dave Franklin
“This song has all the vibe of indie rock from the early 2000s… in his vocal tone there is some stored melancholy” - Karen Campos Ojeda
“… his skill is phenomenal, he clearly knows his instruments inside and out.” - Lisa Hafey
“"Seconds" brings together a slew of influences and has a particular way of grabbing your attention with those guitars. The guitar work on this track is particularly vibrant, and it's really the key element that draws your attention towards the song.”
“This is an impressive debut. It shows Hollow Star has the talent and direction to make a mark in the music scene. We think this is a project worth keeping an eye on, and we’re excited to hear what comes next.”
Hollow Star
Hollow Star is the project of Minneapolis musician Micah Lopez, through which he creates shimmering, melancholic guitar music shaped by early alternative and post-punk influences. His debut EP Listen introduces a sound inspired by the Cure, the Smiths, and Joy Division that feels both familiar and distinctly original.
His debut single “Seconds” reached #1 on SubmitHub’s Power Pop chart, earning twelve curator approvals — a rare achievement for a first release with no prior streaming history. The follow-up single “Capital” also reached #1 in the same category, signaling consistent support and momentum across curators and tastemakers.
