Seconds

“Seconds” is the first single and opening track from the EP Listen

Story

In the middle of recording the first EP Listen I picked up the guitar one morning and just started playing what became “Seconds”. I was a big fan of the Police when I was young so this song was probably my love for Any Summers coming out. The song is very Andy Summers, without all the cool inversions, 11th chords, and great soloing, so really it is nothing like him at all. The lyrics are about God or religion or spirituality or whatever you want to call it. I was not brought up in a religious household (even though my father was an alter boy), but like most people I was exposed to it when I was young (or maybe it exposed itself to me). I wrote this song at a time in my life when a lot of people were talking to me about God. Everyone I talked to had their idea of what God was (which I guess makes sense), but it really seemed like none of these versions of God really had anything in common, and there were a lot of contradictory ideas. The first line came from those conversations, after that it really just wrote itself.

Lyrics

I guess I always figured things would be okay

I never thought you’d let it be any other way

Why do all our conversations begin with me

And are you listening

Calling Calling

I’m looking for you

It doesn’t matter what your name is

Anything will do

All I ever ask for

The only thing I need

Is you to answer me

Everybody’s trying to teach me about you

They say they know you best

Say things they think are true

I wouldn’t know because you never talk to me

Still I’m listening

Calling Calling

I’m looking for you

It doesn’t matter what your name is

Anything will do

All I ever ask for

The only thing I need

Is you to answer me

Calling Calling

I’m looking for you

It doesn’t matter what your name is

Anything will do

All I ever ask for

The only thing I need

Is you to answer me

Calling Calling

I’m looking for you

It doesn’t matter what your name is

Anything will do

All I ever ask for

The only thing I need

Is you to answer me
